I believe that survey tools are a great way to gage the level of understanding of students and to receive feedback from students at the end of a quarter and school year. My goal is to become a high school english teacher, so I would use survey tools a lot so that I can see whether or not students understand a concept and one of the books we are reading. It would either be a simple google form at the end of the quarter or a periodic check-in using hand signals. I would also use surveys in order to understand the things that I have done right and things that I need to improve on. For Intro to Education, I had to interview one of my english teachers from high school and she said that there is always a fear that you are doing something wrong when you first start teaching. In order to quell this fear a little bit, I’ll use surveys to understand what I am doing wrong or right and then edit my lesson according to student responses.

Something that I thought was interesting to read about was the difference between student experiences with technology, specifically with blogging and Diigo. The difference in level of technological literacy is very interesting to read about, especially when students talk about why they might be so inexperienced. I find it extremely interesting to compare the different education that students have received. Some schools have programs that promote different technological skills while others don’t. Although I wasn’t taught a lot, I was required to take a keyboard class in middle school; other students didn’t even receive that. I think that has definitely impacted a lot of students, especially with Covid forcing everyone to do work online.

I would really like to improve on my skills with Windows applications like Powerpoint, Word, and Excel. Even though I’m proficient with Google applications, Word goes more into depth with different functions that I believe would be useful in the classroom. The evident differences between Powerpoint and Google slides highlights the disparity between the two types of applications, as Power Point definitely has more options to customize your slides. I will achieve this goal by forcing myself to use these Microsoft applications that I am not familiar with instead of using Google ones.

  1. Hey McKenna! I am right there with you trying to hone my Microsoft skills. As a user of google for many years, adjusting can be difficult and frustrating. I feel like Microsoft is home to a lot more capabilities, so I am always reminding myself that more material means more practice. After perfecting our skills, I'm sure the benefits of knowing how to use so many different functions will pay off in our work!
